Redefining Classical Music

Etymology Classics:

“Etymology” is the study of a word's origin and evolution. Music evolves the same way - and tracing it back to its roots often reveals insights you'd never find on the surface.

Etymology Classics is our homage to that lineage: a label devoted entirely to the genre where those roots run deepest — Classical music.

Philosophy

Classical music is arguably the most immersive genre. With vast dynamic range, intricate orchestration, colors, and compositions that was written for specific halls to maximize acoustic spatial fields, it’s goal was to immerse the audience to a pool of sound. The historical nature of classical music makes many of the famous repertoire already been recorded before. Our mission is to ensure every Etymology recording offers something bold: fresh interpretations from artists with a genuine artistic vision.

On the production side, we record with sophisticated acoustic techniques and extensive multi-microphone arrays, then mix and master through a state-of-the-art analog signal chain to give each piece the warmth and depth the repertoire deserves.

Our aim is an intimate sound — one where you can feel the spatial relationship between musician and listener, and hear the intricate detail in every instrument the composer intended. Classic recordings often carry a vintage warmth that's beautiful but spatially lacks the depth; modern techniques offers that spatial definition but often lose that warmth. We want both: the warmth of the vintage recordings, but rendered with the clarity, color, and spatial detail modern production makes possible.

Classical Music Reimagined

About Us

Established in NYC 2019 and currently based in Austin, Texas, Etymology Music Group is a multi-genre music company and one of the top classical clients of Virgin Music Group / Downtown Music Group, with more than 1.2 billion cumulative streams across its two sub-labels — Etymology Records, its pioneering lo-fi and electronic production-music label, and Etymology Classics, its classical and orchestral imprint. The group also operates as a sync-licensing and music-publishing agency in partnership with Koze Music.

Etymology was founded and is led by Edward Lim, a recording and mastering engineer, opera singer, and producer working under the name Jazzinuf.

Every Etymology release is recorded and mastered in-house at the label's dedicated analog mastering studio. Working primarily with analog gear and a careful balance of room and close microphones, the label pursues a distinctive, high-fidelity sound: music that feels alive and intimate, as though performed right in front of the listener. The aim isn't simply to meet the standard of a great recording but to push past it.

Etymology Records is a pioneer in the lo-fi and electronic production-music space, with a catalogue of over 939 releases across albums, EPs, and singles and more than 667 million streams across all platforms since 2019.

Etymology Classics works at the highest level of the classical world, with over 531 million streams in three years. The label’s recent highlight consist of a collaboration with Park Avenue Artists, one of New York's leading artist-management firms, where we released the encore piece of Grammy Award–winning violinist Joshua Bell CBE, Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and one of the most celebrated artists of his era. Etymology Classics released Bell's encore recording of a Chopin Nocturne, a piece featured throughout his concert appearances, including the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. And this piece is among his top 3 most listened track on Spotify. Across its roster, Etymology works with laureates and prize-winners of the world's most prestigious competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth Competition.

Etymology maintains an ongoing international studio partnership with the Czech Symphony Orchestra and Czech TV, having recorded an extensive catalogue of more than 50 works together in just two years. Recent collaborators include Michaela Rózsa Růžičková, one of the Czech Republic's most prominent conductors, who works regularly with the country's major orchestras.

Etymology Classics also runs an extensive playlist network, one of them being Classical Bangers.
